To Impress the Girl Next Door
Ronald Koertge

I go everywhere underground. It is a burden
I prefer because I want to deserve her love.

Accordingly when she goes out, I begin to dig.
The tap of her heels on the pavement drives me on.

Occasionally I come to the surface beside the gas
station. She never even nods, which is as it should

be since she does not know who I am or that, for her,
I live to burrow or how at night, curled in my present

tunnel, I think about her pretty feet and giggle
in the rooty air and go to sleep.
