On the Origin of Animal Demographics and Communication
Ronald Koertge

The voyage on the Ark--which had looked
so gleeful in the brochures--turned out
to be a nightmare. Becalmed and bored,
the animals copulated and fainted, losing
an entire species when something huge collapsed
on the pregnant Chuckling Nit, leaving her
mate more alone than anything in history.
Two of the doves never came back, and the slap
of Noah's sandals froze everyone.

Eventually the rain stopped. Eventually
Noah opened the door. They were out before
the stink, going as high, as deep and as far
as they could. Some in their blind misery
and fear circled the globe and came up on
the Ark from the other side. That sound
you hear when you are camping out alone
is the one they made then.
