The Mummy
Ronald Koertge

Maybe she faints because she's scared
and he's horrible. After all, she's wearing
the filmy nightgown all archeologists
slip into after a hard day at the Sphinx,
and he's dressed like a sore thumb,
arms out in the gotcha pose.

But maybe she's just as hot for him.
Maybe he's really just a big present
coming unwrapped and someone to talk to
about intimate things: what other man
could so completely understand the curse?

He's no flirt, either. As he stumbles
toward her, head back like a guy on skates,
there's no glancing around the tomb
for cuter girls. And look how in love
he is! Carrying her everywhere
like a groom who has been waiting
for a thousand years.
