She
Ronald Koertge

likes big machines. Trains so long
the caboose is just a memory, yellow
Caterpillar tractors that can run over
anything. And she especially likes
those cranes with a big steel ball
that can knock down neighborhoods.

She says if she were an engineer,
she would stop anywhere to let me
on, crush anyone with her tractor
who was even rude, demolish
a landmark so I could see better.

You wouldn't know it to look at her,
to see her eat Thai food or go to
the movies. But some nights the sound
of powerful engines wakes me.

Outside, the streets are empty,
but in the moonlight the building
next door is pale with apprehension.
